  Coming Soon!

Heirloom tomato seedlings are staying cozy in the greenhouse.  In just a couple weeks over 20 different varieties will be available.  Find us at Denver Urban Homesteading and Cherry Creek (starting May 5) markets on Saturdays.  Many of the plants are from seed saved from last year’s tomatoes, and others are new for this year.  Some exciting new varieties include, Ananas Noire, Sweet Pea, Indigo Rose and Striped Cavern.  CSA Members: plants available at no charge extra charge.  Email lefflerfarms@yahoo.com to request.

Garlic

A patch of Chesnok Red hardneck garlic planted last fall is coming along nicely.  Dry corn husks are proving to be the perfect mulch.  The “corn straw” preserves moisture and will keep weeds at bay.  Last year, we used wheat straw to mulch the garlic.  It turned out to be full of seeds which sprouted and had to be weeded.  It was a big job!  This year’s seed free mulch is already much appreciated.  Garlic scapes (yea, pesto) will be available in May, and the bulbs will be ready around the first of June.

Planting

We have finally begun planting large portions of our field.  Carrots, beets, turnips, fava beans, and cipolini onions were the first to be planted.  Our rainbow assortment of carrots includes: Dragon, Cosmic Purple, Deep Purple, Amarillo Yellow, Lunar White, and Orange mix.  Our rainbow beet mix will include: Albino, Detroit Dark Red, Burpee Golden, Chiooga, and Blankoma.  Three varieties of turnips planted were Purple Top, Tokyo Market White, and a new variety for this year Scarlet Red.  Cipolini onions are an Italian heirloom prized for their mild flavor.  They are flat globe shaped onions (red, white, and yellow).  With a 60% chance of rain on Sunday, hopefully Mother Nature helps us get these seeds sprouted!

Local Motion CSA

The Extended Season CSA starts the week of April 30th (with Regular and Peak Season to follow).  There are a handful of membership opportunities left for the 2012 season.  The sign-up deadline has been extended for those interested.
