May 15 Weekly Update

Leffler Family Farm’s Weekly Update, May 15th

———————————————————
Planting Continues
The last few nice days have provided us with ideal weather for planting.  This past week we got quite a bit of seed in the ground including: Yellow Wax Beans, Royal Burgundy Beans, Endive, Black Jet Edamame (used as a dried bean), Agate Edamame, Clemson Spineless Okra, Texas Hill Country Okra, Red Burgandy Okra, Silver Queen Okra, White and Orange Sweet Potatoes, Red Norland and Pontiac Red Potatoes, Canna Lilies, Gladiolas, several varieties of sunflowers, Shinguku edible chrysanthemum, Magenta Spreen, along with more leeks, onions, chard, lettuce and spinach.
Seeds Germinating in the Field
The field is beginning to come to life with lots of “baby plants” as our son Huxley likes to call them.  We currently have beets, chard, lettuce, spinach, radishes, onions, leeks, mesclun mix, kale, arugula and Napa Cabbage all starting to come up nicely.  There are still a few challenges we will face over the next few weeks especially with the kale, radish, mustards, and arugula.  Flea beetles damage young leaves by chewing tiny holes that make baby greens look like they were blasted by a shotgun.  They are one of the hardest pests to control using organic approaches, plus we do not ever spray our baby greens with anything, even OMRI approved products.  Instead, we utilize floating row cover in the spring, which is an effective insect barrier.  Also we will plant larger plots of these crops in mid-July when the flea beetle populations are dying back naturally.  This allows us to grow beautiful fall greens without having to use any form of insect protection!
Harvest Timeline
2-3 weeks for radishes, and an assortment of baby greens including one of our favorite seasonal treats, baby beet greens.
Contact Information – Please Read
We are asking everyone to please check your contact list and make sure you have the correct email address for us.  The people who hacked our account a few weeks back created a fake address, lefflerfarms@LIVE.com and used Anthony’s name with it.  We don’t have access to this account, and have no idea who the people are that do; they have no affiliation to us.  What is now happening, is the fake address is being automatically added to people’s contact lists and pre-populating, so you may think you are emailing lefflerfarms@yahoo.com but aren’t!  This causes all sorts of problems and we don’t want to miss an important email from you.  Please take a minute to check your contacts and delete lefflerfarms@LIVE.com.
The correct address is this one, lefflerfarms@YAHOO.com.
We are very sorry for all the trouble and appreciate you helping us out.
