Dragon Carrots
Pictured above are Dragon Carrots harvested from the greenhouse (left) and growing in the field (right). We planted a small patch in the greenhouse mid-February and a larger patch in the field about a month ago. After seeing how beautiful these first “testers” are, it’s exciting to see the next batch doing well. Did you know carrot tops are edible, by the way? I hear they make great pesto.

Yugoslavian Red Lettuce
A gorgeous head of Yugoslavian Red growing in the greenhouse. Lettuce wraps anyone?

Coming Soon
Scapes are beginning to form on the garlic. They will be ready to harvest in a week when they look like a curly cue. Just like garlic in flavor, but much more mild – similar to a scallion. From stir fry to pesto, it’s not hard to find uses for this seasonal treat. Look for scapes at market and in your CSA share next week.

Kale
We planted 8 different types of kale in the high tunnel this year. Red Russian, White Russian, Redbor, Red Chidori, Scotch Blue Curly, Biera/Sea Kale, Tuscano/Lacinato/Dinosaur, and Fizz Kale. Hopefully with the tunnel’s protection, the kale will over-winter and continue to provide fresh, local greens through the winter.

Our ever-changing mesclun mix currently consist of Bull’s Blood (pictured above), Magenta Spreen, Shinjguku, spinach, mustard, kale, assorted loose-leaf lettuce and mache. The mix truly epitomizes fresh, local, seasonal produce. You can also find LFF’s meslun mix at Gaby’s Soups and More as an ingredient in Gaby’s delicious soups. So yummy, and good for you too!
